Grill Cloth, Tolex, and Logo Types

1.1: 10-Inch Eminence Speaker
The "67" indicates Eminence, and "7324" indicates it was manufactured in 1973 during the 24th week. Further, the "horseshoe/plug" magnet design is suggestive of AlNiCo, although as a bass player, this speaker would not inspire a great deal of confidence.

1.1: 12-Inch Eminence Sound City Power Speaker Cone View One
A stock Eminence speaker from the 4x12 cab shown at the top of this page. Eminence 12s were the most common speaker used by Sound City.

1.2: 12-Inch Eminence Sound City Power Speaker Magnet View
Same speaker as above, but showing the "Sound City Power Speaker" label. Note the white lettering on the cone; this speaker was reconed (for what should be obvious reasons). Large square magnet, three diagonally arranged screws, and stamped frame are indicative of Eminence from this era.   Photos Home Page
(See the "Related Links" page for info on EIA speaker codes.)

1.3: 12-Inch Eminence Sound City Power Speaker Cone View Two
One last shot of the same speaker, but showing the new cone. Note the extra doping; along with its three brethren, this speaker was used for bass.   Photos Home Page

1.1: 15-Inch Eminence Speaker Cone View, from a Sound City B115E Bass Cabinet
This rare example of a 15-inch Eminence bass speaker is the stock speaker that was used in the Sound City B115E folded-horn bass cabinets, examples of which are shown on Photo Page 11. The cone is stock.   Photos Home Page

1.2: 15-Inch Eminence Speaker Side View, from a Sound City B115E Bass Cabinet
Note what appears to be an AlNiCo magnet, based on the common "horseshoe/plug" design used with so many AlNiCo speakers of this era. Although there is some surface corrosion (powdering) on the unfinished frame, this stamped-frame speaker is as clean as I've seen. Note also the very deep cone geometry, which was exemplary of bass speakers of this era. Although the rear of the frame has gasket material as well, this speaker is rear-loaded in the baffle of the B115E. (See Photo Page 11 for a shot of this assembly. Also, here is a sketch of a B115E's side-view provided by the owner.)    Photos Home Page

1.3: 15-Inch Eminence Speaker Magnet View, from a Sound City B115E Bass Cabinet
The EIA code on this Eminence speaker ("67") indicates it was manufactured in 1973 ("73") during the 52nd week ("52") of that year. This is a 16-ohm speaker.   Photos Home Page

1.1: 12-Inch Fane Magnet View
Second only to Eminence, Fanes were the most common speaker used by Sound City (Dallas Arbiter).   Photos Home Page

1.2:  Close-Up of 12-Inch Fane Label
A different Fane from above, but a good shot of the small second label that appears on many Dallas Arbiter "Sound City Power Speaker" Fanes.   Photos Home Page

1.1: Close-Up of Sound City Grill Cloth
This cloth appeared on Dallas Arbiter-era cabs from the late 60s to early 70s. Over two years of searching has turned up no current suppliers for this grill cloth.   Photos Home Page

1.2: Close-Up of Sound City Grill Cloth w/ Ruler for Scale
This cloth appeared on the later DA-era and early DMI-era cabinets.   Photos Home Page

1.3: Close-Up of Early Dallas Arbiter Grill Cloth and Logo
Note the silver detail in grill cloth. Also note that the logo is smooth and flat (sans border), rather than the embossed plastic logo (with raised silver letters and border) found on later Dallas Arbiter- and DMI-era products. Over a year of searching has turned up no current suppliers for this grill cloth.   Photos Home Page

1.4: Close-Up of Sound City Black "Basketweave" Tolex w/ Ruler for Scale
This Tolex was used on Sound City amps and cabinets for well over a decade (thoughout the 1970s), and was also used on Hiwatt gear and some Vox gear from the same period. This Tolex is still available today from various sources.   Photos Home Page

1.6:  Close-Up of Early Sound City Grill Cloth, Horizontal View w/ Ruler for Scale   Photos Home Page

1.7:  Close-up of Early Sound City Logo from B80 4x12 Cab
This black-letters-on-white-field logo represents what appears to be a fourth Sound City logo design. (Apologies for lack of scale.)   Photos Home Page

1.8: Close-Up of Sound City Logo from PA80 4x12 Cab
This logo is the larger flat-metal type with silver letters on a black field and which seen mostly on Sound City amp heads. (Apologies for lack of scale.)

1.9: Close-Up of Logo Printed on Sound City Amp Cover   Photos Home Page

2: Close-Ups of DMI-Era Union Jack Logos from Sound City 50 Plus Heads
These two Union Jack logos are seen on some DMI-era heads, and both these examples are from 50 Plus heads. The top logo is from an amp whose serial number begins with "75," which presumably means the amp was made in 1975, or thereabouts. Apologies for the poor photos.   Photos Home Page
